About the program

As hydrogen gains traction for its renewable and low-emission properties, this course equips professionals with the tools to identify, analyze, and mitigate risks in hydrogen production, storage, and usage. Participants will learn industry-standard methodologies such as HAZOP, FMEA, and CFD simulations to assess hazards and prevent accidents.

The course also explores historical hydrogen-related disasters, physiological and chemical hazards, and phenomena like deflagration and detonation. Learners will understand how hydrogen affects materials, especially under high pressure, and how to manage risks in storage facilities. Modules on safety management, legal standards, and emerging frameworks like HySafe ensure participants are prepared to implement robust safety protocols. This program is ideal for engineers, safety officers, and professionals working in hydrogen energy systems and infrastructure.

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and analyze hydrogen-specific hazards using industry-standard tools like HAZOP and FMEA.
  • Understand accident phenomena such as hydrogen dispersion, ignition, and explosion.
  • Evaluate risks in hydrogen storage systems using qualitative and CFD-based methods.
  • Apply safety management practices including audits, process integrity, and change management.
  • Navigate legal standards and safety frameworks relevant to hydrogen infrastructure and energy systems.

Certification

To obtain a certificate of completion for EIT’s Professional Certificate of Competency, students must achieve a 65% attendance rate at live, online fortnightly webinars. Detailed summaries/notes can be submitted in lieu of attendance. In addition, students must obtain a mark of 60% in the set assignments which could take the form of written assignments and practical assignments. Students must also obtain a mark of 100% in quizzes. If a student does not achieve the required score, they will be given an opportunity to resubmit the assignment to obtain the required score.
