About the program

The Professional Certificate of Competency of Energy Storage provides a comprehensive overview of storage technologies and their role in modern power systems. Students will explore mechanical, electrochemical, and advanced electrical storage methods, including pumped hydro, compressed air, lithium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. The course also covers battery integration, performance, safety, and grid-scale applications. By the end, students will understand energy storage fundamentals, emerging innovations, and practical implementation in real-world systems.

This course will commence by explaining the concept of energy storage and its significance in electrical power systems. Additionally, the working principal and applications of the main types of energy storage technologies, including mechanical, electrochemical and electrical energy storage systems, will be discussed to get deep understanding of the main characteristics of these systems. Adding to this, the integration, performance and safety of battery systems will be reviewed. Furthermore, some special types of energy storage, including chemical, thermal and gravitational storage plants, will be studied. Towards the end, grid scale energy storage systems will be discussed to investigate the significance of energy storage on a large scale within an electrical power grid.

Certification

To obtain a certificate of completion for EIT’s Professional Certificate of Competency, students must achieve a 65% attendance rate at the live, online fortnightly webinars. Detailed summaries/notes can be submitted in lieu of attendance. In addition, students must obtain a mark of 60% in the set assignments which could take the form of written assignments and practical assignments. Students must also obtain a mark of 100% in quizzes. If a student does not achieve the required score, they will be given an opportunity to resubmit the assignment to obtain the required score.
